Boys Basketball Postseason Formats

 

 

Division I, II, + III

  • All teams that win at least 40% of their games qualify for their respected division's postseason torunament. However a minimum of eight teams must qualify
  • A preliminary round is needed to reduce the number of teams to eight
  • The number of preliminary games and how many teams receive a bye depends on the number of teams that qualify for the playoffs. Here are the scenarios:

If 8 teams qualify:

  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays No. 8, No. 2 plays No. 7, No. 3 plays No. 6. and No. 4 plays No. 5
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8 game faces the winner of the 4/5 game and the winner of the 2/7 game faces the winner of the 3/6 game

 

If 9 teams qualify:

  • No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 6, and No. 7 receive a bye, in the preliminary round: No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary , No. 2 plays No. 7, No. 3 plays No. 6. and No. 4 plays No. 5
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5 game and the winner of the 2/7 game faces the winner of the 3/6 game

 

If 10 teams qualify:

  • No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 receive a bye, in the preliminary round: No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary , No. 2 plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, No. 3 plays No. 6. and No. 4 plays No. 5
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5 game while the winner of the 2/7/10 game faces the winner of the 3/6 game

 

If 11 teams qualify:

  • No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 receive a bye, in the preliminary round: No. 6 plays 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary , No. 2 plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, No. 3 plays the winner of the 6/11 preliminary game, and No. 4 plays No. 5
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5 game and the winner of the 2/7/10 game faces the winner of the 3/6/11 game

 

If 12 teams qualify:

  • No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 receive a bye, in the preliminary round: No. 5 plays 12, No. 6 plays 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary , No. 2 plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, No. 3 plays the winner of the 6/11 preliminary game, and No. 4 plays the winner of the 5/12 preliminary game
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5/12 game while the winner of the 2/7/10 game faces the winner of the 3/6/11 game

 

If 13 teams qualify:

  • No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 receive a bye, in the preliminary round: No. 4 plays 13, No. 5 plays 12, No. 6 plays 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary , No. 2 plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, No. 3 plays the winner of the 6/11 preliminary game, and the winner of the 4/13 preliminary game plays the winner of the 5/12 preliminary game
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5/12/13 game while the winner of the 2/7/10 game faces the winner of the 3/6/11 game

 

If 14 teams qualify:

  • No. 1 and No. 2 receive a bye, in the preliminary round: No. 3 plays 14, No. 4 plays 13, No. 5 plays 12, No. 6 plays 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary , No. 2 plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, the winner of the 3/14 preliminary game plays the winner of the 6/11 preliminary game, and the winner of the 4/13 preliminary game plays the winner of the 5/12 preliminary game
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5/12/13 game and the winner of the 2/7/10 game faces the winner of the 3/6/11/14 game

 

If 15 teams qualify:

  • In the preliminary round: No. 1 receives a bye, No. 2 plays No. 15, No. 3 plays 14, No. 4 plays 13, No. 5 plays 12, No. 6 plays 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals No. 1 plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary, the winner of the 2/15 preliminary game plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, the winner of the 3/14 preliminary game plays the winner of the 6/11 preliminary game, and the winner of the 4/13 preliminary game plays the winner of the 5/12 preliminary game
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9 game faces the winner of the 4/5/12/13 game and the winner of the 2/7/10/15 game faces the winner of the 3/6/11/14 game

 

If 16 teams qualify:

  • In the preliminary round: No. 1 plays No. 16, No. 2 plays No. 15, No. 3 plays 14, No. 4 plays 13, No. 5 plays 12, No. 6 plays 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • In the quarterfinals the winner of the 1/16 preliminary game plays the winner of the 8/9 preliminary, the winner of the 2/15 preliminarary game plays the winner of the 7/10 preliminary game, the winner of the 3/14 preliminary game plays the winner of the 6/11 preliminary game, and the winner of the 4/13 preliminary game plays the winner of the 5/12 preliminary game
  • In the semifinals the winner of the 1/8/9/16 game faces the winner of the 4/5/12/13 game and the winner of the 2/7/10/15 game faces the winner of the 3/6/11/14 game

 

  • Finals are held on the second Sunday of March
