Softball Postseason Formats

 

    Division I

  • The top 16 teams qualify for the postseason
  • In the preliminary round: No. 1 plays No. 16, No. 2 plays No. 15, No. 3 plays No. 14, No. 4 plays No. 13, No. 5 plays No. 12, No. 6 plays No. 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9
  • The preliminary round winners participate in an 8-team double-elimination tournament:

    Game 1: 1-16 winner plays 8-9 winner

    Game 2: 2-15 winner plays 7-10 winner

    Game 3: 3-14 winner plays 6-11 winner

    Game 4: 4-13 winner plays 5-12 winner

    Game 5: game 1 loser vs. game 4 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 6: game 2 loser vs. game 3 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 7: game 1 winner vs. game 4 winner

    Game 8: game 2 winner vs. game 3 winner

    Game 9: winner of game 5 vs. loser of game 8 (loser is eliminated)

    Game 10: winner of game 6 vs. loser of game 7 (loser is eliminated)

    Game 11: game 7 winner vs. game winner 8 (winner's bracket final)

    Game 12: game 9 winner vs. game 10 winner (loser is eliminated)

    Game 13: winner of game 12 vs. loser of game 11 (loser's bracket final: loser is eliminated)

    Game 14: game 11 winner vs. game 13 winner (if game 13 winner wins, the teams will play another game with the winner capturing the championship)

  • Championship game(s) is/are held second week of June

 

 

Division II

  • 16 teams qualify for the postseason: the top 8 teams in II-East/II-West and the top 8 teams in II-North/II-South (the 9th place team in one of the sub-divisions will replace the 8th place team in the other sub division if they have a better record)
  • In the preliminary round: 1E/W plays 8N/S, 1N/S plays 8E/W, 2E/W plays 7N/S, 2N/S plays 7E/W, 3E/W plays 6N/S, 3N/S plays 6E/W, 4E/W plays 5N/S, and 4N/S plays 5E/W
  • The preliminary round winners participate in an 8-team double-elimination tournament:

    Game 1: 1E-4W winner plays 2W-3E winner

    Game 2: 1N-4S winner plays 2S-3N winner

    Game 3: 1S-4N winner plays 2N-3S winner

    Game 4: 1W-4E winner plays 2E-3W winner

    Game 5: game 1 loser vs. game 4 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 6: game 2 loser vs. game 3 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 7: game 1 winner vs. game 4 winner

    Game 8: game 2 winner vs. game 3 winner

    Game 9: winner of game 5 vs. loser of game 8 (loser is eliminated)

    Game 10: winner of game 6 vs. loser of game 7 (loser is eliminated)

    Game 11: game 7 winner vs. game winner 8 (winner's bracket final)

    Game 12: game 9 winner vs. game 10 winner (loser is eliminated)

    Game 13: winner of game 12 vs. loser of game 11 (loser's bracket final: loser is eliminated)

    Game 14: game 11 winner vs. game 13 winner (if game 13 winner wins, the teams will play another game with the winner capturing the championship)

  • Championship game(s) is/are held second week of June

 

 

Division III

  • Top 6 teams qualify for the double-elimination playoffs
  • No. 3 plays No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5 in the quarterfinals (No. 1 and No. 2 receive byes)
  • In the single-elmination semifinals: No. 1 plays the winner of the 4-5 game and No. 2 plays the winner of the 3-6 game
  • Best of three championship series is held during the first week of June
